    Having much more to offer than the famous Temples of Angkor, Cambodia is blessed with amazing wealth of natural and cultural heritage from undeveloped beaches, untouched forests and beautiful old colonial cities. The nature and culture of Cambodia reflect the gentle, polite and charming personality of the Khmer people, which makes Cambodia such an extraordinary destination.

    Visiting a developing country isn’t easy, you would normally have to do lots of researches before going, but don’t worry, your time is all saved because we have got all the useful information here

     

    1. CAMBODIA WEATHER

    Cambodia is warm year-round with temperatures rarely dropping below 20°C and can be visited at any time of year. Just like Vietnam and Laos, seasons are broken into wet and dry season. Wet season runs from May to October, is usually marked by a brief monsoon in the afternoon and dry one is noticed by hot dry days.

    The ideal months to visit Cambodia are December and January, when humidity levels are relatively low, there is little rainfall and a cooling breeze whips across the land, this is also peak season when many visitors arrive on the country.

    2. CAMBODIA VISA

    In order to visit Cambodia, a visa is required for most nationalities. A passport with at least six-month validity is required. You can get a visa on arrival at most ports of entry including in Cambodia from Vietnam at most border crossings. Payment is in $US only. Remember to bring along 2 passport photos.

    There are two common types of visa listed below (update October 2014)

     + Type 1 : 30-day tourist visa (Type ‘T’): US$30

    Tourist visas can be extended for one month, but only one time.

    + Type 2: 30-day 'Ordinary Visa' or 'Business Visa' (Type ‘E’): US$35

    At this time, ordinary/business visas can be renewed for one month, three months, six months or one year at a time.

     

    3. CAMBODIAN CURRENCY /CASH / ATM

    The national currency of Cambodia is called RIEL (pronounced as in the English word "real").

    However US Dollars are almost the preferred monetary currency throughout the country. It’s advised to carry a supply of USD when visiting Cambodia. Check our the latest currency rates at xe.com

    You can cash U.S. dollar checks at most banks and money exchange places for a 2% charge or withdraw money from Visa/Master debit cardin some banks over the counter with a fee of 1% or $5, whichever is the greater. $4 is how much the bank charge you for oversea use for each time you withdrawing cash from an ATM.

     

    4. PHONE AN INTERNET

    Laos uses GSM system, make sure you’ve got one that unlocked and work with GSM. There are many phone booths in the airport where you can get a SIM card US$5 which include US$10 credit.

    Calls within Cambodia have a low rate that costs between 5-8 cents per minute; however, it varies between networks and time of day. International calls cost about 20 cents per minute.

    Internet is widely available in Phnom Penh an Siem Reap .Free Wi-Fi is available at most hotels, restaurants, Mini Mart, Café and shopping mall while in internet café the rates are under $1 per hour. In other area, access is limited, and cost around $3 per hour.

     

    5. CAUTIONS AND WARNING

    Violent crime is rare, but does occur, and there has been an increase in foreign travellers being robbed.  Petty crime, including bag snatching from passing motorcycles, is prevalent in cities and towns. 

    There have been several occasions over the past few years when political issues and protest events in Cambodia have turned violent.  New Zealanders are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings as they have the potential to result in violence.  We advise monitoring local media and adhering to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

    There is a danger from unexploded landmines in many rural parts of Cambodia, particularly along the border with Thailand.  We recommend you remain on well- used roads and paths as mined areas are often unmarked.
